Village wants Bennington College to contribute

Associated Press - March 21, 2009 2:15 PM ET

NORTH BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A committee of the Village of North Bennington is asking Bennington College to pay the community a voluntary yearly stipend.

Members of the committee believe the college owes to the community in the same way state sites sometimes give towns payments in lieu of taxes.

Committee member Robert Howe says the college has been in Bennington for 76 years, but never really paid anything to the village.

The committee had suggested the college make a payment of $100,000 a year for three years.

The committee says the college's board of trustees had authorized a $20,000 payment.

The college says its discussions with the village have been cordial, but it wouldn't comment further.
