Claremont, New Hampshire - March 24, 2009
Two local unions in Claremont, N.H., rejected a furlough proposal for city workers aimed at saving the city money.
The city council's plan would have required employees to take two days of unpaid leave each month. Councilors estimate it would cut the city's $1 million budget gap in half. But the city's police and fire department unions voted against the furloughs, which means Claremont will have to make up that hole with layoffs and budget cuts.
