MIDDLE ISLAND, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man has been indicted on charges of murder and manslaughter in the death of his girlfriend's 11-week-old infant.
Court records show that 24-year-old Port Jefferson resident Howard Brooks was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury in the death of Madeline Mendolia. Brooks is not the baby's father.
Defense attorney Eric Naiburg says that his client did not intentionally kill the child. Brooks pleaded not guilty to initial charges of assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police and paramedics responding to a 911 call from Sareena Mendolia at her Middle Island home on March 29 found the baby girl in distress. She was hospitalized and died April 1.
Brooks is scheduled to be arraigned on the new charges on Wednesday. He's being held on bail.
