Captain Phillips' Return Delayed

A delayed reunion for Captain Richard Phillips and his family.

The Underhill native was supposed to be reunited with his family Wednesday night at Andrews Air Force Base, but the captain is still aboard the USS Bainbridge in the Indian Ocean. The naval destroyer was sent to help another U.S. ship off the coast of Somalia that was threatened by pirates.

It's unclear when Phillips will set foot again on U.S. soil. His wife Andrea says she understands the Navy is there to help other seafarers too and that the most important thing is that Richard is safe.

Some lawmakers met with the Phillips family to hand deliver a resolution the Vermont legislature passed supporting the family and praising those who rescued Richard Phillips.

"When we visited yesterday the family was much more relaxed and joyful as one would expect. They felt a tremendous amount of support from the communities of Underhill and Jericho; a tremendous amount of support from across the state and across the country," said Rep. George Till, D-Jericho.

Many in the state want to plan a hero's welcome for Captain Phillips but are waiting to see what the family wants.
