Albany, New York - April 17, 2009
The New York Lottery is hoping to join the Powerball lottery as a way to increase state revenue.
The move is expected to get the go-ahead through a provision in the 2009-2010 state budget that allows the state to enter more than one multi-jurisdictional lottery. New York currently participates in the Mega Millions lottery.
Right now, New Yorkers can go to Vermont, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania, to play Powerball. But state officials say bringing the game to New York would bring in $11 million for the upcoming fiscal year and $21 million every year after that.
Lottery officials warn it could take up to a year to get the game going in the state.
