NH Senate to vote on legalizing marijuana for pain

Associated Press - April 28, 2009 2:05 PM ET

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Hotly contested bills coming before the New Hampshire Senate on Wednesday include one to allow people with crippling ailments to use small amounts of marijuana.

A Senate committee is recommending the bill, which already passed the House.

Supporters say the bill would show compassion for the severely ill. Opponents side with law enforcement officials, who say the proposal would invite abuse and be difficult to regulate.

The bill would allow severely ill patients or their caregivers to grow and possess six marijuana plants, six seeds and two ounces of the drug. It would require doctors to certify that a patient has a debilitating medical condition and would benefit therapeutically or by suffering less from using marijuana.
