Charlotte, Vermont - May 1, 2009
In Vermont, the first Friday in May is Arbor Day.
And kids at the Charlotte Central School celebrated by caring for the trees behind the school, and by planting new ones. This is an annual event at the school sponsored by Horsford's Nursery.
The kids say there are lots of reasons to appreciate trees.
"Well they practically eat up carbon dioxide and they produce more oxygen," said Andrew Silverman, a 3rd grader.
"I do kind of favor the sugar maple. I like sugar maple a lot," said 3rd grader Josie.
Charlotte planted a sugar maple in honor of principal Monica Smith. She's retiring this year after 19 years at the school.
