A Native American Powwow is taking place this weekend at Dartmouth College.
The annual event is organized by Native American students at the Ivy League school. The weekend long celebration focuses on the history of powwow's as a social and spiritual gathering. The powwow will highlight traditional dress, food, and dance. The students say the event is for everyone.
"It is not something specific for Native Americans. It is a time for people of all backgrounds and races to come together so in trying to continue the Dartmouth Powwow we are trying to continue that relationship," says John Around Hin of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
"Dartmouth has a really unique history. Dartmouth College was founded for Native Americans that was one of their initial goals. And I think especially for natives, it is a time like John said to get together, and celebrate our history and also share it with other people," says Kalina Newmark of the Sahtu Dene Tribe.
This is the 37th annual Powwow on campus. Students expect people from all over North America to attend.
