BARTLETT, N.H. (AP) - The sight of 2 empty canoes floating down the Saco River caused quite a scare in Bartlett, N.H., but the paddlers from Rhode Island were soon found safe and unhurt.
Bartlett Police say a group of 10 people were on the river in four canoes and two kayaks when 2 of the canoes overturned Sunday afternoon. Police were called when someone spotted the capsized canoes floating down river, but after an hour's search, they found out that other members of the group immediately helped their friends get to shore.
Police told WMWV that the water was running high, fast and cold after overnight rain Saturday and continuing runoff from mountain snow melt. Officials say the group was well prepared, with each member wearing a helmet, wet suit and lifejacket.
