Burlington, Vermont - May 17, 2009
A regional conference on locally-grown food is got under way in Burlington Sunday.
The Farm to School program is the product of three nonprofits that have been promoting the use of local produce in schools and institutions. The conference brings representatives from all over New England and New York State. It includes workshops and panels, and runs through Monday at Champlain College.
Abbie Nelson of the Vermont Feed program said, "We can measure success if we see students who are asking for different kinds of food at their homes. So it's not just, yeah, I put up with it at school. But it has to do with, oh, I'll eat that, Mom."
Organizers of the Farm to School program say another measure of success will be if vegetable farmers can earn a living selling fresh produce to schools.
