Cuts at Dartmouth Medical School

Hanover, New Hampshire - May 27, 2009

Dartmouth College is announcing more layoffs, this time at the medical school.

Twelve staff position are being eliminated and 40 other medical school employees will have their hours cut. College officials say the move will save the school about $5 million next year.

Officials blame the layoffs on the recession and the lack of increased grant funding from the National Institutes of Health.

"It is not just the economy it's that the NIH budget has been flat since 2005. Aside from the new stimulus money that has just come online, fundraising is down a little bit, so it is a multi-factorial set of hits on medical schools and medical centers," said Bill Green of Dartmouth Medical School.

The layoffs are part of Dartmouth's overall plan reduce the college's $700 million annual operating budget by $72 million over the next two years.
