Fire officials say a truck driver delivering propane was lucky to escape a serious accident.
The Blue Flame Gas truck was about a mile up North Branch Road in Middlebury when the right tires hit a soft spot near the shoulder of the road. The driver lost control and the truck, carrying a half-load of propane, slid down a steep embankment.
"He's about 25 to 30 feet down the embankment. The cab is crushed. Somehow he got out himself and made it up to the road. He had a head laceration. I believe that is his most serious injury. I am very surprised we weren't here to do an extrication. Absolutely," said Assistant Middlebury Fire Chief David Shaw.
North Branch Road was closed as another vehicle was brought in to remove the propane from the smashed truck. Two large tow trucks were called to the scene to hoist the propane truck up the bank and carry it away.
