EAST DURHAM, N.Y. (AP) - A combat veteran who wrote a book on a New York military unit with deep Irish roots will help an upstate museum officially unveil a new exhibit on Irish in the military.
The grand opening of the exhibit is being held this afternoon at the Irish Heritage Museum in East Durham in Greene County, south of Albany. The exhibit traces the Irish in the military from medieval times to the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Maj. Sean Flynn is the featured speaker. Flynn commanded a rifle company in Iraq with the New York Army National Guard's famous 69th Infantry Regiment and has written a book on the unit's history.
The "Fighting 69th" traces its roots to pre-Civil War New York City, when many Irish immigrants filled its ranks.
The exhibit runs through Labor Day, Sept. 7.
