Burlington, Vermont - May 30, 2009
People in four separate Vermont communities responded to mock emergencies Saturday.
FEMA, Vermont Emergency Management, and several local agencies practiced disaster aid distribution. Semi-trucks full of food and water were unloaded into waiting cars. The exercise was the first of its kind in Vermont and serves as a training tool should Vermont be hit by a catastrophic event.
"It's tough to tell what would mandate something like this. You see them in Florida after a hurricane. With any luck we wouldn't get a big hurricane like that, but anything could necessitate them. It could be a big flood," said Mark Bosma with Vermont Emergency Management.
Drills were held in North Hero, Middlebury, St. Johnsbury, and Springfield. All of the food will be donated to the Vermont Food Bank.
