Burlington, Vermont - June 1, 2009
The current economic crisis has put added pressure on organizations that help feed the hungry.
That's why the Vermont Foodbank held the Fill a Truck for Hunger event on Monday. Shoppers and other folks stopped by City Market in Burlington to fill a van with non-perishable items that will be distributed by the Foodbank.
"The Vermont Food Bank is the only food bank in Vermont. We serve 270 network partners throughout the state and those are soup kitchens food pantries after school programs and senior centers. We served 66,000 Vermonters last year that is more than one in ten. We have seen from our agencies go up 15 and 50 percent," said John Sayles, CEO of the Vermont Foodbank.
If you missed today's fill a truck for hunger event, two more will be held on August fifth and October first at City Market in Burlington.
