Burlington, Vermont - June 8, 2009
Burlington schools are calling it "gendertopia." The nine-week, voluntary program is run by Outright Vermont and funded partially by Burlington taxpayers. The after-school program focused on a wide range of topics for gay, lesbian and straight students. Students even discussed what color clothes people wear and what it means in popular culture.
"I think just because someone wears a color it really does not reflect who they are as a gender. It could hurt but not always," said Dave Kingsbury, a Burlington High School student.
"The goal is to have a really good after school program," said Chris Neff, of Outright Vermont.
Organizers say they have not received any objections to the program which is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation that is funded partially with tax dollars.
