Police Foundation Recognizes Community Leaders

Burlington, Vermont - June 11, 2009

Three Vermont women were recognized Thursday for their work with disadvantaged children.

Leisa Pollander, Vicky Smith and Mary Alice McKenzie were presented with the Queen City Police Foundation's Medal of Honor. They are the directors of three nonprofits that concentrate on the welfare of children-- the Sara Holbrook Center, the King Street Youth Center and the Boys and Girls Club.

McKenzie observed, "We haven't lost control of our city. There are large cities in this country and there are small towns in this country that have lost control of the communities. But we haven't, in large part because of what you all do every day."

Local officials point to community policing as one positive aspect and individual officers who take part in youth activities.
