Store Clerk Takes Plea Deal for False Robberies

Barre, Vermont - June 19, 2009

An East Calais store clerk has taken a plea deal for staging two robberies last winter.

In November, 23-year-old Darci Herdling claimed that a gunman robbed the East Calais General Store of $1,400 and that the gunman kicked her baby across the room. Three days later she reported another robbery. Herdling later admitted she made up the stories to cover for injuries her daughter suffered when she accidentally dropped her.

On Monday, Herdling pleaded guilty to giving false information to an officer and grand larceny. She was sentenced to six days in jail and 54 days on a work crew. She'll also have to pay about $1,500 to Vermont Crimestoppers, which is the amount spent investigating her false claims. She's already paid back the store, which is run by her mother.
