Brooklyn neighborhood gets landmark status

Associated Press - June 23, 2009 2:45 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - A Brooklyn neighborhood of 850 buildings from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century is New York City's latest historic district.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission voted Tuesday to create the Prospect Heights Historic District.

The new historic district includes row houses, apartment houses and commercial buildings in several different architectural styles. Commission Chairman Robert Tierney said the neighborhood has "a unique sense of place."

The Prospect Heights district is next to the site where developer Bruce Ratner plans to build a basketball arena and 16 skyscrapers. However, his development will not directly encroach on it.

A state agency met Tuesday and voted to adopt a modified plan for the new development, called Atlantic Yards.
