Barre, Vermont - June 27, 2009
Aging underground water pipes are taking a toll on the City of Barre.
For the second time in less than a month, a water main broke, sending city water down the street. This break was reported on Hill Street about three o'clock Saturday morning. The city engineer says the cast iron pipe was around eighty years old, and it split evenly down the side.
Barre City Engineer Reg Abare said, "The pipe is under about 200 pounds of pressure, so it didn't take long to make its own hole. Unfortunately, we experienced about a thousand feet of road damage here, which is going to cause us to delay some of our projects to take care of this problem here."
Officials say no major damage was reported to the homes on Hill street. The road damage will be cleaned up and fixed after the water dries. Barre isn't the only place that's had trouble with old water mains. Burlington is also struggling with the same problem.
