West Bridport, Vermont - July 13, 2009
An intrusive weed that's choking Vermont's lakes could actually have a positive and powerful purpose.
Milfoil spreads rapidly, making any water activities very difficult. Recently, a harvesting machine has been gathering tons of the slimy weeds from Lake Champlain and sending it to a dairy farm in Bridport. They're not just trying to clear the lake, however. Next month, energy experts will explore whether they can get electricity from the nuisance plant. The Bridport dairy farm already produces electricity using methane from cow manure. Now a grant from Central Vermont Public Service will help see if the same can be done with milfoil.
