The Eagle Times put out its final edition last Friday, and told employees it was going out of business. Now workers are saying that most of the paper's delivery drivers are still owed two weeks pay, and never received their last checks. The drivers are independent contractors, so they are not direct employees at the Eagle Times.
"I had to come in at 2 o'clock in the morning and tell my drivers that they are not getting paid today. They were supposed to get checks in 12 hours and they have nothing," said former Distribution Manager Jennifer Lantz. "They have rent checks already mailed out; they've got car payments mailed out. Some of them went out and delivered those papers knowing that was the last 20 bucks in their gas tank. And what did they get for it? Nothing."
The drivers also delivered the Connecticut Valley Spectator, which is owned by the same company, and also out of business now.
