Vt. landlord fined for violating lead paint law

Associated Press - July 23, 2009 5:05 AM ET

BENNINTON, Vt. (AP) - A Bennington area landlord has agreed to pay an $18,000 fine for violating Vermont's lead paint law.

The Vermont Attorney General's office says Peter Cross also will spend $71,500 to reduce lead paint hazards at his properties as part of the settlement.

The state accused Cross, who owns 37 rental properties in the Bennington area, of failing to perform annual maintenance at 14 properties built before 1978 as required under Vermont's lead law.

The state says Cross filed 28 false compliance reports with the Vermont Department of Health in 2008 and 2009 saying the maintenance had been done.
