READSBORO, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Supreme Court has upheld the murder conviction of a Readsboro man who fatally shot his son's friend in 2005.
Peter Kulzer, 72, was convicted in 2006 of shooting 19-year-old Thomas Oxton in front of Kulzer's home.
The state presented evidence that Kulzer feared he was losing his influence over his son, Peter Kulzer, a military veteran who had talked about joining the Marines with Oxton.
Kulzer appealed his conviction and sentence of 20 years to life, imposed in 2007, saying the judge should've allowed an officer to say Kulzer didn't speak to police on the day of the shooting and the jury should have been instructed that they could convict Kulzer of voluntary manslaughter.
The Rutland Herald reports the Vermont Supreme Court rejected both arguments.
