Boats are allowed back at Thayer Beach in Colchester.
The town select board has reversed an earlier decision that forced boaters to drop anchor off shore rather than pulling up close to the beach.
Town officials were worried about the safety of swimmers now that the beach is easily accessible by land and has become more heavily used.
After hearing complaints from boaters, selectmen struck a compromise that allows boats near the shore, but also reserves an area exclusively for swimmers.
