Sanders Calls for Curb on Oil Speculation

Washington, D.C. - July 29, 2009

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is calling for strict curbs on oil speculation. He's introduced legislation that would require a congressional commission to exercise emergency powers to limit speculation, like stopping sudden or unwarranted changes in prices. On Tuesday, Sanders told the Commodity Futures Trading Commission that Americans can't afford Wall Street speculators.

"In the midst of a major recession, Vermonters and all Americans should not have to pay artificially high gas prices at the pump or high heating oil prices this winter because of Wall Street speculation and greed," Sanders said.

From April to June 24 of this year gas prices went up for 54 days in a row, the longest streak in more than a decade.
