Accused arsonist pleads no contest, gets 46 months

Associated Press - July 29, 2009 3:35 PM ET

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - An accused arsonist who claimed multiple personality disorder after being charged in a pair of 2006 fires was ordered to serve almost four years in prison.

Cheryle Potwin, 52, of Sharon, entered no contest pleas Wednesday to one count of arson and one count of attempted arson in the fires in Hartland and Woodstock.

The plea agreement was reached after four separate psychiatric experts returned different opinions as to whether Potwin can control her so-called "alters."

Vermont District Court Judge Kathleen Manley sentenced Potwin to five to 15 years in prison, with all but 46 months suspended. She has already served almost three years and will now have to serve one more year in prison.
