Two Bald Eagles Fledge in Vt.

Barnet, Vermont - July 30, 2009

A patriotic victory for the state of Vermont.

This year, the state had two successful bald eagle nesting sites. The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus reports that the two young eagles fledged and took flight last week. Last year, Vermont only had one successful nesting site, making this year the most successful fledging since the 1940s.

The new arrivals came from nests in Concord and Barnet. State officials say habitat loss and the use of pesticides led to the disappearance of bald eagles in Vermont. Now the state has doubled its nesting population and is on the road to recovery.
