HIV-positive man charged with spitting on cop

Associated Press - July 30, 2009 8:55 AM ET

RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - Police in Rutland say they've lodged a felony assault charge against a man with HIV who spit in the face of a police officer.

Gerald A. Lamb, 31, of Rutland, is charged with aggravated assault for a June 17 incident that began when family members called police because they believed he had a head injury and may have taken some drugs.

He was taken to Rutland Regional Medical Center, where he allegedly cocked his head and spit in the face, eyes and mouth of police Sgt. David Schauwecker.

Schauwecker, who will be tested every three months for HIV, told the Rutland Herald he tried to save someone's life and is now worried at the prospect of a life sentence of his own.
