Burlington, Vermont - August 18, 2009
A power outage in Burlington created a computer mess at the state's largest hospital. Fletcher Allen kept the power going. However, a backup power system for it's new multi-million dollar electronic medical record system failed. It forced medical staff to go back to keeping paper records for the day, making a lot of things at the hospital run slower.
"We were able to continue providing patient care. We had to reschedule just one elective surgery. Although it certainly caught people off guard, it was a surprise naturally, everybody responded very well and got through the day in good shape," said Mike Noble of Fletcher Allen Health Care.
The electronic records system was back up and running by 5pm Tuesday evening. Now all those new paper records have to be put into the system.
