Wal-Mart Near Civil War Battlefield Wins Approval

Locust Grove, Virginia - August 25, 2009

A piece of Vermont history will soon stand in the shadow of a big box store.

Wal-Mart won approval this week to build a 138,000-square-foot Supercenter in Locust Grove, Va. The site, however, is located just a mile from the historic 2,700 acre Wilderness Battlefield, where Civil War Generals Lee and Ulysses S. Grant first met in battle 145 years ago. Nearly 30,000 soldiers lost their lives in that battle, including more Vermonters than in any other conflict. Congressman Peter Welch strongly opposed the store. However Wal-Mart says the new store will be shielded from visitors to the battlefield.
