Rutland, Vermont - September 5, 2009
The Douglas administration is considering an offer by the state employees' union to avoid further job cuts.
The Vermont State Employees Association says the state could save 7-point-4 MILLION dollars and avoid laying off 200 to 300 workers later this month. The savings would come through four furlough days, four unpaid holidays and ending the wellness plan. Governor Jim Douglas says his administration received the proposal late last night and will need the holiday weekend to review it.
"I hope we can come up with an agreement. The alternative would be more layoffs of state employees, which is not my first choice. So they put some new ideas on the table. We continue to advance them and we hope over the course of the next week or so we can have a meeting of the minds and come to some agreement," Douglas said.
Earlier this year 100 state workers were laid off to save money.
