Pilot Survives Plane Crash

Morrisville, Vermont - September 7, 2009

A small plane crashed at the Morrisville-Stowe airport late this afternoon.

Channel 3 News has learned the pilot, 51-year-old Peter Hebert of Stowe, took off in a home-kit experimental plane he built himself. A witness tells us the plane was about 150 feet off the ground when it suddenly veered left, and then nose dived into some hay bales on the nearby Miller Farm.

Hebert was the only person on-board. Witnesses say he was conscious and alert when rescuers got to him. It took about 25 minutes for him to be pulled from the plane. He was immediately air-lifted to Fletcher Allen. Witnesses say it appears he has leg and arm injuries, cuts and bruises. And that the hay bales may have saved his life.

The FAA is investigating the crash.
