Vergennes Police Chief Resigns

Vergennes, Vermont - September 8, 2009

Under the weight of criminal charges and an admitted drug problem, Vergennes Police Chief Mike Lowe has resigned.

Lowe submitted his resignation on Friday. The city manager says Lowe cited health reasons.

Lowe has been on leave since June after his involvement in a minor traffic accident led to DUI charges and later, additional criminal counts, including embezzlement and prescription fraud. Lowe's lawyer says it all stems from an addiction to painkillers.

Court records indicate Vergennes Patrolman Mott Roorda supplied the chief with some drugs over the past two years. He was suspended last week and is also expected to resign.
