Ronald Paul CyrBrattleboro, Vermont - September 9, 2009
A judge has ordered a psychiatric evaluation for a Barre man accused of trying to lure a child into having sex with him.
Police say 62-year-old Ronald Paul Cyr spent a year-and-a-half chatting online with a detective from the Brattleboro Police Department who he thought was actually a young girl. Police say the two arranged to meet on Saturday, when Cyr was arrested.
At his arraignment Tuesday, Cyr's attorney requested a competency evaluation at the Vermont State Hospital, which a screened concurred he needs. The judge ordered it but said Cyr won't be released from the hospital without appearing in court first.
Cyr's lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf. Prosecutors, who disputed the need for a psychiatric evaluation, also filed notice that if Cyr is convicted on this current charge they'll seek habitual offender charges. Cyr has two convictions of sexual assault, two convictions for burglary and one count of aggravated domestic assault. Both charges carry a potential life sentence.
