Bennington Man Sentenced for Destructive Drunken Incident

Bennington, Vermont - September 23, 2009

A Bennington man was sentenced Tuesday for a drunken act of destruction.

Police say 36-year-old Michael Myers was in a drunken rage last year when he tried to run over a neighbor and then attempted to ram the victim's home where a child was sleeping inside. When police arrived, he assaulted two officers.

In May, a jury cleared Myers of an attempted murder charge, but found him guilty on seven other counts, including aggravated assault on a police officer and reckless endangerment.

A judge sentenced him to seven to fifteen years in prison.

Myers, who's been behind bars since his arraignment, is now suing 18 correctional officers and other officials in connection with a riot at the Rutland Jail last year. Myers says his civil rights were violated and he was denied medical care.
