Strafford, Vermont - September 23, 2009
Vermont wildlife officials say white nose syndrome has decimated a bat population in an Upper Valley cave.
During a routine inspection earlier this month, biologists discovered nearly all the bats at the Elizabeth Mine in Strafford are dead, apparently due to white nose syndrome.
Nearly 1,000 bats lived in the cave in 2006, making it the second largest home to bats in New England.
Biologists still can't figure out what is causing the mysterious disease that is killing bats throughout the Northeast and now as far south as Virginia.
