Slaughterhouse Plan Set for Former Woodstock Farm

Woodstock, Vermont - September 25, 2009

A former water buffalo farm in South Woodstock may soon be the state's newest slaughterhouse.

The farm on Church Hill Road closed this week because owner Frank Abballe said he was having trouble getting proper feed for the buffalo, which produced milk to make cheese and yogurt. According to The Rutland Herald, Abballe is shipping his animals to another farm and now plans to turn the facility into a slaughterhouse. He wants to truck in thousands of lambs from Pennsylvania and keep them on the farm until they are ready for slaughter.

Town officials and residents aren't wild about the plan, largely because of the traffic it will bring to the small town, but there are no town regulations that would prevent Abballe from setting up the slaughterhouse.

Abballe is in the process of getting permits and hopes to open the facility in the spring.
