GE Aviation in Rutland may have found a way to save jobs by offering early retirement packages.
Faced with a decline in airplane engine orders, the company is offering voluntary retirement packages to as many as 160 workers. Earlier this year GE offered temporary furloughs to 45 workers as a way to save jobs. But now company officials say enough employees have signed up for the early retirement packages that GE should be able to avoid any layoffs. GE employs about 1,100 people at its two plants in Rutland.
