Human remains found at upstate NY reservoir

Associated Press - September 28, 2009 7:35 AM ET

COLDSPRING, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are trying to identify the human remains that were found by a fisherman along the shore of a remote western New York reservoir.

Capt. Bob Yale of the Cattaraugus (kat-uh-RAW'-gus) County Sheriff's Department says the skeletal remains were found Saturday afternoon by a man fishing at the Allegany (al-leh-GAYE'-nee) Reservoir near Salamanca, 50 miles south of Buffalo.

Yale said it wasn't immediately known if the person was male or female, or if foul play was involved in the person's death.

He said the reservoir's water level had been lowered for the fall, and the remains were found in the mud along the shore.

The reservoir is located on the Pennsylvania border in rugged terrain along the western edge of Allegany State Park.
