Four Sentenced in Giant Chili Heist

Bennington, Vermont - September 30, 2009

Four people have been sentenced for trying to steal a 300 pound metal chili pepper off the top of a Chili's Restaurant in Bennington last month.

Police say they ran an extension cord across four lanes of traffic in order to power an electric drill, which they used to try and remove the pepper. Police discovered them while responding to a burglar alarm.

The group, including two Bennington College seniors, a recent grad about to start Americorps and an applicant to an Ivy League school were originally charged with felonies for the failed prank.

However, under a plea agreement the four received misdemeanor charges and two-year deferred sentences. Under the sentences they must do 200 hours of community service, which includes a car wash in the parking lot of the Chili's, and write a five-page essay on how their offense has wasted taxpayer money.
