Accused Teacher Faces More Charges

Morrisville, Vermont - September 30, 2009

Nearly three weeks after his arraignment on charges of sexual assault on a minor 28-year-old Shaun Bryer is facing a new charge of lewd and lascivious conduct with a child. Prosecutors charged Bryer, Wednesday, in Lamoille County Court.

About a week ago police say a 14-year-old boy came forward and told police Bryer put his hand down the boy's pants. The alleged incident happened less than two months ago.

"Everything that we have right now states that this is one incident that occurred with this recent victim," says Det. Lane Burnham of the Vermont State Police.

Two other 14-year-old boys allege Bryer sexually abused them over a number of years. Police say another teenage boy witnessed the latest incident but right now they do now know of any other victims.

"We don't have any other victims but again this is an ongoing investigation," says Burnham.

Bryer was also charged Wednesday with possesion of child pornography. Police say he had at least one nude photo of one of the initial victims on a portable flash drive.

Bryer is currently out on bond.

Court affidavits show Bryer spent years grooming his two initial alleged victims all the while grooming his own public image as a teacher and president of the Morristown select board. At least one criminal psychologist says some offenders find it an aphrodisiac to be revered by the public as they keep dirty secret. Child advocates say public trust makes it easier for suspects to get away with these types of crimes.

"This really crosses all lines and it is not unusual for someone to be in a trusted position that no one would suspect that this was a secret part of their life," says Linda Johnson with Prevent Child Abuse Vermont.

Advocates say parents should be weary of anyone who is eager to spend a lot of time with their children. Offenders will sometimes gain the trust of a family by offering babysitting services, or offering do do nice things for the child. Advocates say it may seem like a blessing and that the person is a trusted friend but parents should still use caution.

"There is nothing that would give you instant recognition and an 'a ha!' this must be an offender," says Johnson.

If kids are spending a lot of time with one person parents should unexpectedly pop in from time to time just to make sure all is well. Parents should also be aware of changes in their child's mood, behavior, or eating habits. When in doubt parents should ask a child outright if they have been touched inappropriately because they likely will give an honest answer.
