Accused Killer Wants Trial Moved

Bennington, Vermont - October 1, 2009

A Bennington County man wants his upcoming murder trial moved.

Michael Christmas, 42, of Shaftsbury, is charged with first-degree murder. Police say he shot and killed his former brother-in-law Ronald Wilkins two years ago in Shaftsbury. He was afraid Wilkins would tell police about his alleged illegal sex acts with children.

Christmas claims the trial has received too much pre-trial publicity, and picking a non-biased jury in Bennington County would be tough. A courtroom brawl at his arraignment was captured by Channel 3 on video, and earlier this year the Vermont Supreme Court tossed his confession, ruling police should have stopped questioning him when he invoked his right to remain silent.
