NORTHFIELD, Vt. (AP) - A fundraising campaign led by a former president of the NBC television network has raised more than $18 million for Vermont's Norwich University.
Pierson Mapes, a 1959 graduate of the private military college, launched his plan two years ago, saying he would match estate contributions from members of the "Old Guard," a Norwich tradition recognizing alumni marking their 50th reunion.
Norwich President Richard Schneider calls the Mapes pledge an exceptionally valuable gift that boosted fundraising from people who knew they could double the value of their contributions.
Norwich is ending a $55 million fundraising campaign a year early.
