NEW YORK (AP) - A forum on hate crimes against transgender people will be held in New York City.
The forum Wednesday at Brooklyn Law School comes nearly three months after the state's first hate crime conviction for the killing of a transgender person.
Dwight DeLee was convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime in the 2008 slaying of Lateisha Green in Syracuse.
The forum's organizer, the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund, says Green's relatives will attend.
The group says transgender people face "pervasive discrimination, harassment and violence."
Prevention strategies will be discussed.
In June, a national coalition said transgender people accounted for 12% of victims of violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people reported in 2008.
