Burlington, Vermont - October 7, 2009
Vermont's roller derby team is one step closer to being nationally ranked.
The Green Mountain Derby Dames learned this week they have been accepted to the apprenticeship program of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. WFTA is the roller derby equivalent of the NFL for football.
It means the Derby Dames will be paired up with a WFTDA member team that will teach them more about the sport. The goal is to be accepted as full members so the Derby Dames can compete against ranked teams from across the country.
"It's really really exciting for us because we've been building from the start to be WFTA members," said Nicole "Bruise Control" Losch. "We were trying to follow their rules, trying to follow their membership requirements, and so it just shows that it's kind of paying off and that all the hard work that we've put in to it is, it's almost there."
You can see the Green Mountain Derby Dames in action this Saturday when they take on the ManchVegas Rollergirls at the Champlain Valley Exposition.
