Vermont Teacher Wins Big Award, Even Bigger Check

Montpelier, Vermont - October 9, 2009

Teachers and students filed into the Montpelier high school auditorium Friday not knowing what to expect, but as soon as the Governor took the stage they knew something was up.

Tom Sabo, a 13 year teacher at the school, was in for a surprise totaling $25,000. He was awarded the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award at a surprise school assembly.

"He was definitely the first person that came to my mind," said Andrew Bullard, a senior at the school.

The Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award is handed out annually in 48 states to a teacher nominated by his or her peers. Sabo was one of more than 60 vermont teachers nominated for the honor. Students say Sabo is a hands on science teacher, best known for bringing his curriculum to life.

"His classes are fun. They're not boring to listen to and he always makes up a joke," said Andrea Weiler, a senior.

Sabo's real pride and joy is this green house in garden. He helped build it outside the school in 2004 and uses it to help teach students about sustainability.

The greenhouse is integrated into the curriculum in all of his classes, hands on learning taught through food.

"We're sensory creatures and we have to feel it, smell it, touch it, and encompass all of it," said Sabo.

Sabo has yet to feel, smell, and touch his $25,000 check, and isn't he isn't sure how he'll spend it.

"I have no idea yet, maybe get a new shirt," said Sabo.

For now, he's just trying to make sense of his day, now $25,000 richer, and a sudden celebrity at Montpelier High School.
