Underage Drinking Lands Boys in Trouble

Hinesburg, Vermont -- October 10, 2009

Two teenagers turned up safe, but now they're facing underage drinking charges, after one was reported missing in Sunset Lake in Hinesburg.

Police say the boys, whose names were not released, went out in a canoe Friday night and capsized. One was treated for hypothermia, then refused to identify his drinking companion until after police had questioned him for three hours.

Meanwhile, the other boy remained missing overnight while mutual aid mustered a search on the water and in the woods.

Acting Hinesburg Police Chief Fred Silber told Channel 3, "He had found a place to sleep overnight while we were all out looking for him. The problem with this whole situation is, we had three fire departments on the scene, Charlotte and Shelburne brought two boats out. The University of Vermont Police Department brought out one of their K-9 units, as did South Burlington. So we had a lot of resources devoted to this incident."

The boys will face underage drinking charges and police say additional charges are possible.
