NYC landmarks agency ponders 'anti-slavery' houses

Associated Press - October 12, 2009 7:45 AM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - A group of mid-19th century Manhattan row houses associated with the anti-slavery movement and the 1863 Civil War Draft Riots is being considered for historic designation.

Spokeswoman Elisabeth de Bourbon says the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission will vote on Tuesday. The nine houses are on West 29th Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues.

The agency says abolitionists met in the homes and hosted black and white guests during an anti-slavery convention in 1856.

The commission says 339 West 29th St. was a stop on the Underground Railroad.

It says some of the homes were attacked during Emancipation Proclamation celebrations and the 1863 riots.
