Associated Press - October 12, 2009 9:35 AM ET

EAGLE BAY, N.Y. (AP) - State police say excessive speed was likely to blame for a one-car crash on an Adirondack Mountains highway that left two upstate New York two men dead and a third hospitalized.

Troopers identified the dead men as 22-year-old Matthew Girouard (Jeh-RARD') of Thendara and 24-year-old Craig Sears of Eagle Bay.

Investigators say 22-year-old Matthew Lewis, also of Eagle Bay, was driving early Sunday morning on Route 28 near Old Forge when he lost control of his sports utility vehicle. The SUV hit an embankment, severed a utility pole and rolled over several times, throwing all three men from the vehicle.

Lewis was airlifted to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse with injuries that aren't life threatening.

The accident happened about 100 miles northeast of Syracuse.
